There are a multitude of window treatment products on the market today.  Shades, sheers, shutters, blinds, draperies, curtains, valances, cornices, Silhouettes, Pirouettes, Duettes, wood blinds, faux wood blinds, woven woods, roman shades, solar shades, sun screens, vertical blinds, Luminettes, honeycomb shades, roller shades, and the list goes on and on.  How do you decide which one to buy?  Here are some things to consider that will make your decision easier.

One of the first things to think about is the view.  Do you want to control the sunlight entering your room and still be able to see what is outside?  Some products are either open or closed; you can either see through the treatment or you can’t.  Other products are adjustable and let you control the light coming in and still see out.

Another thing to think about is which way the treatment opens and closes.  Some open and close vertically, they move up and down.  Others open and close horizontally, they move left and right.  This decision can be based on the way the windows operate, the size of the windows, or it can just be a personal preference.  The great (or maybe difficult) thing is the options available.  You can definitely find a solution that fits your style.

Each different product has a different insulating value and UV rating.  The insulating value relates to how much heat, or cold, the window treatment lets through.  A honeycomb shade will have a much higher insulating value compared to a screen shade.  The UV rating relates to the amount of UV (ultraviolet) light a window treatment lets through.  For example, a wood blind with the vanes open lets almost all the UV light in sunlight through.  However, if the vanes are closed almost no sunlight, and UV rays, get through.  Products like Silhouettes, allow view through and still block close to 80% of the UV rays.  An important thing to remember is the UV light is portion of sunlight that fades floors, furniture, and other furnishings.
