Some rooms have perfect structural balance.  A good example is a family room with a fireplace in the center with windows, or book shelves, on each side.  Everything is symmetrical and evenly balanced.  Interest needs to be created in the room.  In this case furniture should be placed in an asymmetrical way.  You can paint one or two walls a different color to help create interest.  Scale, size, and placement of furniture must all be considered to make this room look fabulous.

If you have a room that is not symmetrical or does not have perfect structural balance, a different design concept is needed.  In this case we want to create more balance.  Balance can be created by using surface finishes and by the placement and color of furnishings.
