Valances are a nice touch in a kitchen setting.  This is especially true if the sink is in front of the window.  You may not want to use full length curtains from a cleanliness factor, but a  valance will add personality with far less potential for getting dirty.

Valance Design Considerations

Valances are a lot simpler than many other window treatments.  They do not generally open and close, so privacy may be a factor for the stand alone style.  If privacy is a concern, you can always add a nice set of blinds or sheers.

More often than not, the valance will be used in conjunction with drapes, blinds and curtains to add style.  Adding a well placed valance can create an elegant, sophisticated look in a room with a simple touch.  The styles of valances are as varied as you can imagine, so picking a complimenting style and color can really offset the window treatments in a positive way.  Of course, choosing the style and color can be almost as difficult as choosing the other types of window treatments!  But don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for.

Of course, the general style is one of your biggest choices when you are just starting your design journey.  Some of the more common styles are shaped, balloon and swags.  A shaped valance is any valance with a shaped cut or style at the top.  Balloon valances have bows that rise in the middle to create a billowy affect.  Swag valances have longer ends that flow down on the left and right.
